- (1471–1528)Artist.Dürer was born in Nuremburg, Germany where his father was a goldsmith. After extensive travel, he settled in Nuremberg and in the latter part of his life he worked for the Emperor Maximilian I. Dürer is remembered for his wood-cuts and engravings, some of which were used to illustrate the Bible. In particular his series of scenes from the Apocalypse (1497/8), The Fall of Man (1504) and Melancholia (1514) are widely known. Dürer remained a Roman Catholic, but he was a friend of Desiderius erasmus and Philip melanchthon and after his death was much praised by Martin Luther.Albrecht Dürer, Works, edited by C. Dodgson, G.
